Knebworth Primary School caterer scoops top prize in national baking competition

Some of the most highly-skilled talents in educational catering took part in the annual competition promoting culinary talent, Finishing Touches, held at the Hilton Metropole, Birmingham on Thursday.

Amongst the pool of talents from authorities specialising in catering for education across the UK was HCL (Hertfordshire Catering Ltd), who is now celebrating its success having scooped the top prize “Best in Show” for the second year in a row at this year's competition.

HCL had six entrants in this year’s competition, with some entering more than one of the 15 categories available, receiving an amazing 3 silvers and 6 bronzes on top of the Gold, ‘Best in Class’ and ‘Best in Show’ won by Lisa Miles, from Knebworth Primary School.

David Gower, Food Development Chef at HCL, said: “I’m so proud of my colleagues; HCL is absolutely thrilled with the number of awards we have received at this year’s event. To have been awarded ‘Best in Show’ for the second year running, after Jean Potter’s fantastic win last year is an amazing achievement by Lisa. The standard of competition is always so high, highlighting the amount of hidden talent in the education sector.”

David continued, “Lisa has an unbelievable skill set that has been self-taught after deciding to learn to make cakes, so she could have fun making exactly what her daughters wanted for their Birthdays each year. The cake itself is a masterpiece with a real fun element and some excellent precision finishing that set Lisa aside from the competition.”

Lisa Miles, from Stevenage, was awarded Gold, Best in Class and top prize ‘Best in Show’ in the ‘Decorated Celebration Cake’ category for her colourful 3 tier Rainbow Unicorn Cake.

Having won the competition at her first attempt in Finishing Touches, Lisa, said: “I can’t believe I won the Best in Show. I am over the moon. The competition was really strong this year with some great cakes on display. I’m absolutely delighted to have won”

Now in its 12th year, the competition is organised by the Lead Association for Catering in Education (LACA) in association with the Craft Guild of Chefs. Finishing Touches is a culinary display competition aimed at all levels of staff employed in any aspect of local authority catering.

Also celebrating success were Katherine Bridge from Breachwood Green School, winning two Silvers for her Cupcakes and Cake for Special Diet, Kirsty Shead from the Sele, winning two Bronzes for her Cupcakes and Cheesecake. Mobile Cook Sean Chasney winning two Bronzes for his Individual Fruit Tartlets and Cheesecake, Tina Lee from Adeyfield Academy, winning a Bronze for her sculpted cake and a Silver for her decorated celebration cake and HCL Contract Supervisor, Heather McNair winning a Bronze for her covered sponge.
