New menus have been introduced across HCL-catered primary schools this half-term, bringing exciting new dishes to the county’s school kitchens while significantly reducing sugar content.
Lin O’Brien, Chief Executive of HCL, said: “Our development chefs have worked with pupils to develop this new menu, which we’ve designed to bring exciting dishes and new flavours to the county’s school meals, while continuing to provide a healthy, balanced meal for pupils.”
“We’ve also redesigned a lot of our recipes to reduce the sugar content, meaning we’re buying nearly 7 tonnes less sugar to use in our meals. With all these changes, I’m confident that we’re offering tasty meals that students want to eat, that are also healthy and nutritious.”
The new menus, which have been on offer since the 30th October, provide students with at least two meal choices each day and include new dishes such as:
As well as classic favourites such as Roast Beef, Macaroni Cheese and Pizza, made using wholemeal flour. Seasonal vegetables and salads are available every day and fresh fruit is always on offer.

With each menu change HCL introduces seasonal changes to the meals they serve, in addition to trying out some new recipes. On average they introduce more than 10 new dishes on each menu. Other meals are tweaked according to feedback from kitchen staff and pupils. After three months of development each recipe is taste tested by a panel of school pupils before it makes it on the menu of more than 30 delicious dishes. However, some of our dishes which are firm favourites, such as our delicious chicken pie – freshly cooked from scratch on site – remain unchanged.
