Potato Patato, Tamayto Tomato! We’re Celebrating Veggies for Vegetarian Week!

Vegetarian Week isn’t just about avoiding meat-based dishes – it’s about promoting healthy eating habits, sustainable food choices, and celebrating the many benefits vegetables provide. It’s also a chance to showcase a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes from around the world.

Incorporating more vegetarian-based meals into your diet can help reduce our carbon footprint, conserve water, and promote animal welfare. Additionally, embracing a plant-based diet offers numerous health benefits.

To encourage healthy eating and environmental responsibility, we’re launching a plant-based meal option once a week. Too often, vegetables are relegated to the role of ‘side dish’ rather than being the star of the plate. That’s why we’re highlighting how vegetables can truly take center stage in a meal.

Here are some of the tasty vegetarian dishes from our new Primary Autumn-Winter Menu, launching after the October half-term:

  1. Shepherdess Pie (Vegan)

  2. Egg Breakfast Muffin (Vegetarian)

  3. Homemade Vegan Sausage Roll (Vegan)

  4. Layered Sweet Potato Bake (Vegetarian)

  5. Veggie Sausage Bow Pasta (Vegan)

Why not join us in celebrating Vegetarian Week? We’re inviting pupils, staff, and parents to embrace more vegetarian-based meals this week! Whether you're a committed vegetarian or just curious to try something new, there’s never been a better time to explore the diverse and exciting flavours of vegetarian cooking.

Here are a few simple ideas for easy swaps from meat-based to plant-based dishes this week:

  1. Replace your beef mince with Quorn mince in your family’s shepherd’s pie, cottage pie, or chilli.

  2. Swap diced chicken for a can of drained chickpeas in your curry.

  3. When making burgers for the family, try replacing beef mince with a can of drained black beans. Simply use your potato masher to mash up the beans with the flavourings you’d typically use for homemade burger patties, such as diced onions and garlic.

  4. Use vegetable stock instead of chicken or beef stock in soups.

  5. Swap meat-based sausages for veggie sausages.
