At HCL, February is all about love, whether it’s the love for great food, teamwork, or personal growth. In line with National Apprenticeship Week, we’re celebrating the power of apprenticeships and how they help shape careers. This week, we’re spotlighting Helene Walker, one of our dedicated Contract Managers, who shares how her apprenticeship journey has supported her role in managing kitchen staff.
A Journey of Growth and Learning

Helene has been a valued member of HCL for 21 years, starting as a Contract Supervisor before stepping into her current role as a Contract Manager nine years ago. Always eager to challenge herself and grow within her position, Helene took a significant step in her professional development by enrolling in the L5 Operations & Departmental Manager Apprenticeship, a qualification equivalent to a Higher National Diploma (HND) or Foundation Degree.
The Inspiration Behind the Apprenticeship
Helene first heard about the opportunity through Angie Pearson, HCL’s Training and Standards Manager. A conversation with Angie in June 2022 sparked her interest when she expressed a desire to take on new challenges within her role. Determined to push herself further, she decided to embark on the apprenticeship journey.
“I wanted to challenge myself and grow in my role. This apprenticeship was the perfect opportunity to do just that,”
-Helene Walker
What Did the Apprenticeship Involve?
Completing an apprenticeship while managing a demanding role is no easy feat! Helene’s programme involved:
Monthly meetings with her Trainer Assessor
Homework, including reading, assignments, and projects
A Project Proposal, Presentation, and Professional Discussion
A Portfolio of Evidence demonstrating her learning and achievements
It was a two-year journey of hard work, dedication, and personal growth. Though challenging, Helene embraced every part of it, recognising how it would ultimately benefit her role at HCL.
“There were times when balancing work and study felt overwhelming, but with the right support and determination, I made it through. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing,”
-Helene Walker
Balancing Work and Learning
Adjusting to the demands of an apprenticeship alongside work responsibilities took time, but Helene found her rhythm. With strong support from Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and understanding colleagues, she was able to balance both commitments. Having time at home to focus on coursework and a team that tolerated her occasional moments of stress also made a big difference!
“The support from my colleagues was invaluable. Whether it was giving me space to focus or simply encouraging me through tough times, their belief in me helped keep me motivated,”

How the Apprenticeship Transformed Her Role
Through this experience, Helene gained a broader perspective on HCL’s operations. She enjoyed the challenges that came with the apprenticeship, particularly in questioning her approach to work in a positive and constructive way.
“I feel I gained more of an understanding of the ‘bigger picture’ within HCL. Recognising how I could apply my learning to my role was incredibly beneficial. The apprenticeship helped shape me into the Contract Manager I am today.”
She also emphasised the confidence boost that came with completing the programme:
“The knowledge and skills I developed have made me a more effective leader. I feel more confident in my ability to support my team and drive positive change.”
What’s Next?
For now, Helene is focused on continuing to be the best Contract Manager she can be. With her newfound knowledge and skills, she’s more confident than ever in leading her team and ensuring success within her kitchens.
